PRO 41: (HIGH URIC ACID, JOINT PAINS)
Causes:
- Dietary Factors: Consuming purine-rich foods such as red meat, organ meats (liver, kidneys), shellfish, certain fish (sardines, anchovies), and sugary beverages can lead to elevated uric acid levels.
- Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to high uric acid levels or conditions such as gout.
- Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions such as kidney disease, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, diabetes, or obesity can contribute to high uric acid levels.
- Medications: Some medications, including diuretics (water pills), aspirin, niacin, cyclosporine, or certain chemotherapy drugs, can increase uric acid levels.
- Alcohol Consumption: Excessive alcohol intake, particularly beer and spirits, can elevate uric acid levels and increase the risk of gout attacks.
Symptoms:
- Joint Pain: Acute onset of severe joint pain, typically in the big toe (a symptom of gout), but can also affect other joints such as the ankles, knees, wrists, or elbows.
- Swelling and Inflammation: Swelling, redness, warmth, and tenderness in the affected joint(s), often accompanied by limited range of motion.
- Tophi: Formation of urate crystals deposits (tophi) under the skin or in joints, leading to visible lumps or nodules, particularly in chronic cases of gout.
- Limited Mobility: Difficulty walking or performing daily activities due to joint pain and inflammation.
