Causes:
- Alcohol Abuse: Excessive and prolonged alcohol consumption can lead to alcoholic liver disease, including fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and cirrhosis.
- Viral Infections: Viral hepatitis infections, particularly hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), can cause inflammation of the liver and lead to chronic liver disease.
- Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Accumulation of fat in the liver, not caused by alcohol consumption, often associated with obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol, or metabolic syndrome.
- Autoimmune Hepatitis: The immune system mistakenly attacks liver cells, leading to inflammation and liver damage.
Symptoms:
- Fatigue: Persistent tiredness, weakness, or lack of energy, often accompanied by a feeling of being unwell.
- Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes (icterus) due to elevated levels of bilirubin in the bloodstream.
- Abdominal Pain: Pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen, often described as a dull ache or feeling of fullness.
- Swelling: Swelling in the abdomen (ascites), legs, ankles, or feet due to fluid retention.
- Easy Bruising and Bleeding: Increased susceptibility to bruising, bleeding gums, or nosebleeds due to decreased production of clotting factors.
- Itching: Persistent itching (pruritus), often worse at night, due to bile buildup in the bloodstream.
