Causes: Angular stomatitis, also known as perleche or angular cheilitis, is typically caused by a combination of factors including:
- Fungal infections (such as Candida albicans)
- Bacterial infections (often Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus species)
- Nutritional deficiencies (especially of B vitamins like riboflavin and niacin)
- Excessive saliva accumulation in the corners of the mouth
- Allergic reactions to oral hygiene products, cosmetics, or certain foods
- Poorly fitting dentures or oral appliances that irritate the corners of the mouth
Symptoms:
- Redness, swelling, or inflammation at the corners of the mouth
- Cracks or fissures in the skin at the corners of the mouth
- Pain or tenderness when opening the mouth wide or eating
- Dryness or scaling of the skin around the corners of the mouth
- Itching or burning sensation in the affected area
- Occasionally, the presence of pus or discharge if there’s a bacterial infection
- Discomfort or difficulty in speaking or smiling, especially if the condition is severe or untreated
